My mother was abusive, I think. But saying that still doesn’t feel right. The words don’t quite fit in my mouth.

Her circumstances were extreme—working a full-time job while caring for a mentally ill child and a bi-polar, paraplegic man with very little outside help. She also had untreated anxiety, issues with her own family, and a constant battle to keep our finances intact against medical costs. No human being can go through all that without being fucked up.

My mother is an extraordinary woman for surviving. And for becoming the best teacher in the city, by many accounts. She’s won awards, she’s gained the adoration of hundreds of kids. She’s given of herself for years. She was devoted to my father.

When I was little, she was my hero. I wanted to have her strength. She taught me so much about fairness, generosity, and intellectual voracity. About being equal to your partner and workplace feminism. She made me proud to be a woman. She took me to get my nose pierced on a whim. She gave me books and drove me to protests and let me write papers on legalization of marijuana and abolishing the death penalty when I was just thirteen. She saved my life when I was suicidal, made me cope with the world when I was anxious. She warmed me when she boasted to others that I could cook (she only thinks that because she can’t) or sing or write or take great pictures.

But then there’s the other mother. The one who made me stay up sobbing until two o’clock in the morning, screaming at me because I couldn’t learn my times tables or was with a boy she didn’t like or I embarrassed her in public. There’s the mother who put a treadmill in my bedroom and made walking on it each day a chore to do along with the dishes. Who sat in the car while I walked laps in the park, told me I’d be so pretty if I were thin, thought my sexuality a distasteful phase (even as she defended gay rights to her students).

There’s the mother who was so obsessed with getting me into college, she made the very act of going to one nearly unbearable for me. Who regularly devalues me for not being at a university. Who asked me about my algebra homework before asking me if I was okay when I had fits of depression.

There’s the mother who only hugged me when I told her I wanted to die or when my dad was in the hospital. The mother who shrugged me off when I touched her. Who told me to stop crying at my dad’s funeral and still refuses to listen to my grief. The mother who forgets my birthday, fobs me off to relatives when she thinks she can’t handle my emotions. Who scared the shit out of me by walking out of our house when I was a child, not telling me when she’d be back. Who shamed me for asking questions about sex, was enraged and disgusted when she sniffed out any trace of healthy sexual interest. Told me I was lazy, stupid, ungrateful, ugly, weird in both overt and subtle ways.

There was the constant threat, the constant fear that I would be screamed at, humiliated, judged based on my body or my intellectual capacity or emotions. I was scared of being abandoned sometimes, especially in the face of my dad’s lack of stability and my mother’s lack of affection. But most of the time, I was scared of being seen. I wanted to escape her relentless scrutiny. I felt hunted.

My mother helped shape the parts of me that want to learn and grow and be strong and stand up for others. But she also shaped the parts of me that want to cower, that fear every passing stranger and friend. She created hideous and frightening anger in my heart, a propensity to feel safer in loneliness. A mistrust of my body and mind. A deep hunger for affection and acknowledgement, yet a fear of the same.

She made me, she saved my life. She’s made me want to take my life on many occasions.

So, Happy Mother’s Day, mom. I love you. You hurt me every day, and I love you.

An incredibly-adapted species, this fish is camouflaged to mimic a dead leaf, both in body shape and pattern. It can change colour to match its surroundings and has a projection from its bottom lip that resembles a leaf stalk. When hunting, it stalks its prey in a head-down stance, appearing to drift towards it like a dead leaf drifting in a current. When it strikes at an item of prey the entire mouth protrudes outwards, forming a large tube into which the prey is sucked, usually head first. This happens so quickly it is often difficult to see. It can swallow prey almost as big as itself in this way.
